Those lazy days of summer may be coming to an end for your non-homeschooling friends, but for us, summer doesn’t end until the autumnal equinox on September 22nd.
That doesn’t mean we aren’t busy learning, though. For one, we’re definitely clear that summer is still on!
Now is a great time to spend some time delving into the wonders of astronomy and letting your kids discover where our calendars, seasons, shorter days and longer nights all come from.
If you’re lucky, you may even get a chance to sneak a peek at the Perseid meteor shower this month. They peak tonight, but you still have a chance to see them for many days to come. Here are some tips for viewing.
The meteors will be all over the night sky moving away from the constellation Perseus, hence their name. Meteors appear as Earth passes through the tail of a passing comet as we hurtle through space. Dust and debris from the comet’s tail are on a collision course with our planet, and fortunately burn up due to friction as they enter our atmosphere, providing us with a heavenly light show.
