Field Trip Connections

While chatting with some homeschool buddies the other day, I remembered another great California field trip, Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma.

Cabrillo offers insights into different periods of California’s history: starting with the museum detailing Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s exploration of California, touching the 1800s with the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, and ending with WWII coastal defenses. There is plenty of life science to discover with trails and tide pools.

A good book to go along with this field trip is Around the World in a Hundred Years by Jean Fritz. This book gives a good overview of the age of exploration; however, Cabrillo’s expedition isn’t covered, so you will need to do some internet or library searching for specifics.

And here are a couple of links to pages I found with long lists of California field trips.
